Steak, Mates & Mental Health: How Grafton's Men’s Steak Night Is Changing the Conversation
When Connor Perring arrived in the Clarence Valley, he noticed something missing. After attending similar events in Brisbane, he saw a gap in Grafton for men to gather, talk, and support one another in a relaxed setting. Although hesitant at first, he decided to take the leap and put on the very first Men’s Steak Night and the community showed up in force.
Held on the last Thursday of each month at the Jacaranda Hotel, the event offers more than just a $20 steak and drink. It’s a space where blokes can come together with no pressure, no expectations, and leave feeling a little lighter than when they arrived.
A Familiar Format That Works
By choosing a local pub as the venue, the event taps into a setting many men already feel comfortable in. Add a hearty meal and a few mates, and it becomes a space where conversations happen naturally.
The first night drew over 60 attendees, far exceeding expectations. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many eager to return and even contribute ideas for how the event could grow.
What’s Happening This Month
The next event is set for Thursday, 31st July 2025, and it’s shaping up to be another great night. Here’s what to expect:
- A $20 steak and drink combo
- A raw, honest guest speaker (to be announced)
- Giveaways and prizes from local legends
- A relaxed atmosphere with no pressure to talk
Whether someone wants to share, listen, or simply enjoy a feed, the night is open to all men looking for connection without judgement.
Community Backing Makes It Possible
A number of local businesses have stepped up to support the event and help with costs. Sponsors include Cansdell Signs, Bucked Up, NSW Cobber Club, Alpha Wash Grafton, and BKB Hunting & Outdoors.
Cansdell Signs has provided high-quality signage that helps boost the visibility of the event across the Valley, and The Jacaranda Hotel continues to be a key supporter by hosting and backing the initiative.
National organisations like Trademutt and TIACS have also contributed, offering giveaways and mental health resources tailored specifically for men.
Why This Matters
Men’s mental health is a growing concern in regional communities. In Australia, one in eight men will experience depression, and one in five will face anxiety at some point. Even more alarming, suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 44.
Despite these statistics, many men still struggle to speak up. Events like Men’s Steak Night break down those barriers by offering something simple and familiar—a feed, a yarn, and a reminder that no one has to face things alone.
While there are no formal mental health services involved yet, there are plans to connect with professionals as the event evolves.
Looking Ahead
Connor has big plans for the future. He hopes to:
- Bring in more powerful guest speakers
- Explore new venues during summer
- Host a family fun day later this year
- Expand the event model into other towns in the Clarence Valley
Right now, much of the cost and organisation falls on Connor himself, from printing 500 flyers to covering event supplies. More local support could make a huge difference, helping keep the night affordable and accessible to all.
How You Can Help
- Tag a mate who might enjoy a night out
- Share the event online
- Sponsor a meal, prize, or speaker
- Come along and be part of the night
