Emergency services were called to the Pacific Highway at Halfway Creek, about 40km south of Grafton, shortly after midnight today following a serious crash between two trucks.
Police said the collision happened just after 12am on Friday 5 September, when a Kenworth prime mover towing two trailers, travelling northbound, and a Man prime mover towing a trailer, travelling southbound, collided near Kungala Road. It has been reported to us that the truck was overtaking when it came across tyres on the road, causing it to swerve.
Paramedics treated both drivers at the scene. The 42-year-old driver of the Kenworth was taken to hospital with minor injuries, while the 30-year-old driver of the Man truck was not injured.
The crash caused major traffic delays through the early hours of the morning. The highway was closed in both directions until about 1.20am when one northbound lane was reopened. By 2.30am, contraflow traffic arrangements were in place to allow vehicles to pass through the site one direction at a time. Southbound traffic was queued for around 5km as crews worked to clear the wreckage.
The trucks were removed late in the morning, with fencing repairs commencing about 11.40am. As of early this afternoon, one of two lanes in both directions remains closed. Motorists are being urged to slow down and take extra care when travelling through the area.
Police have confirmed inquiries into the cause of the crash are continuing. Anyone who may have information or dashcam footage from the area is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
