Traffic was heavily impacted this morning following a two-vehicle accident on Yamba Road at Shallow Channel, near Micalo Island, just before Yamba.

Around 6.40am, emergency services were called to the scene after reports that a silver sedan and a dual cab utility had collided. The sedan sustained severe front-end damage and came to rest across both lanes, while the utility left the roadway, crashing down the rocky embankment with the front of the vehicle entering the river.

Both occupants managed to exit their vehicles, with one reportedly seen running east from the scene before police arrived. A search of the area was carried out by officers, assisted by the Police Dog Squad, however the individual was not located.

The vehicle in the water was seen leaking a small amount of fluids visible from the roadway, prompting a HAZMAT response. Grafton’s Hazmat 306 crew attended alongside Wooloweyah RFS, NSW Ambulance, and Police. Fire and Rescue crews implemented fire protection measures and used spag sorb to absorb fluids on the road, while Hazmat members wearing personal flotation devices deployed an absorbent boom around the submerged vehicle to contain the leak.

Traffic was backed up for around two kilometres in both directions, with school buses and commuters facing significant delays throughout the morning. Alternating traffic flow was put in place around 8.45am while crews worked to safely remove the vehicles and clear the scene, with the road fully reopened by 9.10am.

No injuries were reported. Inquiries into the incident are continuing by police attached to the Coffs/Clarence Police District.

Anyone with dashcam footage or information about the driver who left the scene is urged to contact police.
