A man has died following a stabbing in the Clarence Valley early this morning, with the incident prompting a major police operation and the closure of part of the Gwydir Highway.
Around 1am on Wednesday 17 September 2025, emergency services were called to the Gwydir Highway near Hay Street, Waterview, after reports of an assault.
When officers from the Coffs/Clarence Police District arrived, they located a 35-year-old man who had suffered stab wounds while walking along the street. Despite efforts from NSW Ambulance paramedics, the man died at the scene.
Police have confirmed that initial inquiries suggest the stabbing was targeted. A crime scene has been established, with detectives from Coffs/Clarence working alongside the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad to investigate the incident.
The investigation has resulted in the Gwydir Highway being closed between Skinner Street and Rogan Bridge Road at Waterview and South Grafton. The closure is expected to remain in place for much of the day while forensic examinations are carried out.
Light vehicles are being diverted via Rogan Bridge Road, Clarence Way and Summerland Way. Heavy vehicles are being parked or are advised to delay travel until further notice.
Authorities have reminded operators of Class 1, 2 and 3 vehicles that, unless specified otherwise, they must consult their relevant enforceable network map to confirm a suitable approved alternative route. Those travelling under a Permit are not permitted to travel off their approved route unless they obtain an updated permit from the NHVR.
The closure is causing significant disruption for motorists and freight operators, with delays expected across the South Grafton and Waterview areas. Motorists are being urged to avoid the area and allow additional travel time. Residents are also advised that police will maintain a strong presence while the investigation continues.
Detectives are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the area between midnight and 1.30am to come forward.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Grafton Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be provided anonymously.
