Harwood Hosts Mullet Bake with a Message

On Saturday 19 July, locals gathered at Martins Point in Harwood for more than just a good feed. The community mullet bake brought together fresh seafood, cultural knowledge, and real talk about the future of the Clarence River.

The event, organised in partnership with local fishers and environmental groups, served up freshly caught mullet alongside expert insights on river health, fish stocks, water quality, and cultural perspectives.

“This was about more than food,” said organiser Graham Loy. “It was about connection, knowledge sharing, and empowering our community to care for the river we rely on.”

Funds raised on the day were donated to the Lions Club of Maclean, who will direct the proceeds to BlazeAid’s ongoing work supporting disaster-affected communities. The Lions Club would like to thank everyone who donated, volunteered, and joined in. Your support helps them continue their work across the Clarence Valley and beyond.

Special thanks go to the many groups and individuals who made the day a success, including:

Clarence River & Richmond Fishers Co-ops, Clarence River Guardians, OzFish, Harwood Rec Fishing Club, Yaegl Elders, and Janelle Saffin MP.

The event closed with a community Q&A. Honest, hopeful, and full of ideas. The river speaks, and so do we. Let’s keep listening.
